Meter, sensor and indicator runs
Shunt and display wiring, temperature sensors, low-side switching. Currents in the milliamp-to-2 A range where copper cost matters more than capacity.
Charge-controller signal wiring
Battery-sense and remote-display leads inside an enclosure, and other DC control runs that never carry the array current.
Work the length first. Volt drop is current × metres × 62 mV/A/m ÷ 1000, and solar work is usually designed to 3% on the DC side. A 2 A sensor or small-panel lead on a 24 V system has a 0.72 V budget: 0.72 × 1000 ÷ (2 × 62) = 5.8 m of route. Load the same cable to its full 6 A on 24 V and the budget is gone at 1.9 m. On a 12 V battery circuit at 6 A it is under a metre. That is the honest shape of this size: fine for short, low-current DC, wrong for a panel-to-inverter home run, which is why installers step to 4mm DC cable or 6mm DC cable for the array itself.
Single-core DC cable, not AC building wire, and no substitute for the array home run. The 6 A comes from BS 7671 method C at 30°C as the nearest published reference for one current-carrying conductor; a rooftop in June is hotter than 30°C and derates it. Should I use XLPE solar cable instead?
For anything exposed on a roof, yes. XLPE insulation is rated to a higher conductor temperature and stands continuous sun and heat better than PVC, which is rated 70°C here. Work it out: current × metres × 62 mV/A/m ÷ 1000 gives the drop across the pair, and DC design usually allows 3%. At 2 A on a 24 V system that is 0.72 V, so 5.8 m. At the full 6 A on 24 V it is 1.9 m, and on a 12 V circuit under a metre. Low system voltage is what makes DC runs short.
Can I use 0.75mm DC wire for a solar panel string?
Only for a very small panel over a very short lead. A typical residential string runs several amps over tens of metres, and at 62 mV/A/m this size spends its volt-drop budget long before its 6 A. Use 4mm DC cable or 6mm DC cable for the array and keep this size for sensor and control runs.
