What does each solar DC cable cost today?

Thirteen sizes and constructions, smallest to largest. The small sizes up to 6 mm² do panel strings and controller wiring; 10 mm² and up are DC feeders on bigger arrays. A solar cable price in Pakistan is the daily copper rate wearing insulation, so it moves with the metal and no printed figure stays correct for long. As of August 2026, the two sizes that carry most residential solar strings are 4 mm² and 6 mm² single-core DC cable: 4 mm² is rated 36 A and 6 mm² is rated 46 A on the BS 7671 method C reference, and both are sold as a red and black pair, per metre or per 90 m coil. A 6 mm² conductor holds half as much copper again as a 4 mm² conductor — 53.3 kg per kilometre against 35.6 kg — so it always costs more per metre, and the honest way to buy either is a dated factory quote against a named size, insulation type and length. Which size for which string length?

On the DC side the current is modest — a typical string of modern panels works at roughly 12–14 A, and the exact figure is the Imp line on the panel datasheet — so ampacity is rarely what forces the size up. Length is. Every metre of cable eats volts, and volts lost on the string side are watts the inverter never sees.

Volts lost at a string current of 13 A over the run length shown, computed as current × run × millivolt figure ÷ 1000. Voltage-drop values (mV/A/m) per BS 7671 (IEC 60364-5-52), reference method C (clipped direct), 30 °C ambient; conductor data per IEC 60228. The millivolt figure already counts both legs of the loop, so measure the run one way, array to inverter. Worked at 30 m, which is a common roof-to-inverter run in a two-storey Pakistani house: with the string at 13 A, 4 mm² loses 13 × 30 × 11 ÷ 1000 = 4.29 V, and 6 mm² loses 13 × 30 × 7.3 ÷ 1000 = 2.85 V. In power terms that is 13 × 4.29 = 56 W wasted against 13 × 2.85 = 37 W — a 19 W difference burning in the cable, all day, every sunny day, for twenty-five years of panel life. That arithmetic is why installers put 4 mm² on short strings, step to 6 mm² somewhere past a 20 m run, and go to 10 mm² or 16 mm² for long feeders and combined runs.

These figures size the cable for the run; they do not design the system. String voltage, fusing, isolator rating and earthing all interact, ambient on a Pakistani roof runs far above the 30 °C reference, and an array is a live DC source whenever the sun is up. PVC or XLPE: which insulation does a roof need?

Same copper, different coat, and the coat is what the roof attacks. PVC left in direct sunlight hardens and cracks over a season or two; the XLPE and double-PVC constructions exist for exactly that duty. This is the honest version of the choice, without selling you the dearer wire where the cheaper one does the job.

Why is solar DC cable red and black, and double-insulated?

Red is positive, black is negative, and unlike an AC circuit the polarity never alternates — it is fixed the moment the connectors are crimped. Colouring the two conductors differently along their whole length means a polarity mistake at the inverter or a connector is visible before it is expensive. That is why the cable is sold as single cores in a red and black pair rather than as one two-core cable: each leg routes separately, and each is identifiable anywhere you cut it.

The double insulation is about where the cable lives and what it carries. A string sits on an open roof — UV, heat, abrasion against tray and clamp — and it is live whenever the sun is up, at up to the 1000 V DC printed on the sheath. DC current does not pass through zero the way AC does, so a DC fault arc has no natural extinguishing point; the second insulation layer means one nick or one hardened patch does not put a live conductor against the roof. Why does the solar DC cable price in Pakistan change every day?

Because the cable is mostly copper, and copper is a world commodity quoted daily in dollars. A 90 m coil of 6 mm² holds 53.3 × 0.090 = 4.8 kg of conductor before a gram of insulation, so when the metal or the rupee moves, the coil moves with it. That is why this page carries markers filled from the day's sheet instead of printed figures that would be stale by Thursday.
