Check the coil before you pay for it

Every coil leaves our factory with a QR code printed on the packaging. Scan it and the factory record for that batch opens: brand, cable size, batch number, year of manufacture and conductor. Compare the batch number on screen with the one printed on your coil — if the two do not match, it did not come from us.

Worked example, from the voltage-drop figure in the table. A 20 A DC feed over a 40 m route from a rooftop array down to the inverter loses 20 × 40 × 7.3 ÷ 1000 = 5.8 V. The tabulated 7.3 mV/A/m covers both legs of the circuit, so the route length counts once, not twice. The same run on 4mm² would lose 20 × 40 × 11 ÷ 1000 = 8.8 V — three volts more, for the sake of about 18 kg less copper per kilometre (53.3 against 35.6). Once a DC run passes roughly 30 m it is the drop, not the amps, that picks the size.

How long a run can I do on 6mm DC cable?
Work it from the drop, not from a rule of thumb. At 20 A the cable loses 20 × 7.3 ÷ 1000 = 0.146 V for every metre of route. If you allow 3% of a 400 V string, that is a 12 V budget, so 12 ÷ 0.146 = about 82 m. Halve the current and the distance doubles. Take your own string voltage from the inverter data and have your installer confirm it.
How many metres of 6mm DC cable do I need?
Measure the route from the array to the inverter, then double it — one positive core and one negative core cover the same ground. Add the string links between modules, and about 10% for the roof route, bends and terminations. Send that metre count and your city on WhatsApp and one number comes back against today's copper rate.
