Earth cable connects an electrical system to the ground. When a fault sends current where it should not go, the earth cable carries it safely into the earth and lets the breaker trip.

A common rule: the earth conductor should match the phase conductor up to 16 mm². Above that, it can be smaller — a 16 mm² earth is typically enough for a 25 or 35 mm² phase conductor. For solar systems, see the solar earthing guide.
