When the earth conductor is the same metal as the line conductor, BS 7671 Table 54.7 sizes it from the line conductor: up to 16 mm² the earth matches the line; from 16 to 35 mm² it is 16 mm²; above 35 mm² it is half the line size. So 6 mm² earth pairs with a 6 mm² line conductor.
