Shops write it as 7/.064 — two aluminium conductors of seven 0.064″ strands each, PVC insulated and sheathed to 450/750 V. It carries 66 A on BS 7671 reference method C, about 14.5 kW at 220 V single phase. This is the cable most electricians mean when they ask for 16 mm service wire: the single-phase meter drop for a house whose load or run length has outgrown 10 mm². Every coil leaves our factory with a QR code printed on the packaging. Scan it and the factory record for that batch opens: brand, cable size, batch number, year of manufacture and conductor. Compare the batch number on screen with the one printed on your coil — if the two do not match, it did not come from us.

On a 2-core single-phase run the current leaves on the line and returns on the neutral, so the drop is 2 × current × length × resistance ÷ 1000, using the 1.91 Ω/km in the table above.
A 60 A single-phase load with 30 m between the meter box and the main board: 2 × 60 × 30 × 1.91 ÷ 1000 = 6.9 V. That is 3.1% of 220 V, inside the 5% BS 7671 allows on a power circuit — 11 V here. The same 60 A spends the whole 11 V at 11 × 1000 ÷ (2 × 60 × 1.91) = 48 m, and at this cable's full 66 A the limit tightens to 44 m.
Note what the smaller size does at the same load: 10 mm² aluminium is tabulated at 48 A, so a 60 A load rules it out on heat before the volt sum is even reached. That is one honest reason to step up. Distance is the other: at 40 A over 60 m the 10 mm² pair drops 2 × 40 × 60 × 3.08 ÷ 1000 = 14.8 V, past the 11 V budget, where the same run on 16 mm² comes to 2 × 40 × 60 × 1.91 ÷ 1000 = 9.2 V and clears it. Both figures use the IEC 60228 resistance at 20 °C; a conductor working near its 70 °C rating has more resistance, so leave margin and confirm your run in the voltage drop calculator.

Two kinds of buyer come to this size. One is the house with a heavy single-phase load — several air conditioners, a pump, a big geyser — where a 10 mm² drop is at its 48 A ceiling. The other is the long drop: a boundary-wall meter box, a house set well back, and 30 metres or more of cable in between. Both are fixed runs, terminated at two ends, which is the work aluminium does well and cheaply. It is not for the circuits behind the main board — sockets and lights belong in copper, where small conductors take repeated bending and tight screw terminals.
