Two numbers set the limit and buyers usually check only the first. Heat: 6 A, which at 220 V is 220 × 6 = about 1,320 W for everything hanging on the end. Read the rating plate and divide the watts by 220 before you buy. Length: voltage drop is current × metres × 62 mV/A/m ÷ 1000. A 4 A load on a 15 m lead drops 4 × 15 × 62 ÷ 1000 = 3.7 V, which is 1.7% of 220 V and fine. Run the same cable at its full 6 A and the 5% BS 7671 allows on a power circuit — 11 V at 220 V — is spent at about 29 m. Past that distance the length picks the size, not the load: step up to 1.5mm 2 core flexible cable at 19.5 A and 29 mV/A/m.
Two cores means no earth. Use this cable only on double-insulated equipment with a two-pin plug — never on a metal-bodied appliance, tool or geyser, where the earth core is the safety path. For those, use 0.75mm 3 core flexible cable or a larger earthed size. The 6 A figure assumes method C at 30°C; coiled on a drum or bunched in a duct it carries less. Have a licensed electrician confirm the cable for your load.
