The cord size for anything light and portable. Two 1.5 mm² class 5 conductors — 30 strands of 0.25 mm each, so it bends without work-hardening — tabulated at 19.5 A with both conductors loaded, clipped direct at 30°C, on 300/500 V PVC. That covers lamp and fitting cords, fan leads, chargers and short two-pin extensions on a 220 V supply, where nothing has an earthed metal body. The counter calls this size 3/.029. Every coil leaves our factory with a QR code printed on the packaging. Scan it and the factory record for that batch opens: brand, cable size, batch number, year of manufacture and conductor. Compare the batch number on screen with the one printed on your coil — if the two do not match, it did not come from us.

Heat sets one limit on a cord; run length sets the other. Voltage drop is current × length × 29 mV/A/m ÷ 1000. A 5 A load down a 12 m lead drops 5 × 12 × 29 ÷ 1000 = 1.74 V, which is 0.8% of 220 V — nothing you would notice. Load the same cord to its full 19.5 A and that 5% allowance — 11 V on a 220 V circuit — is reached at 11 000 ÷ (19.5 × 29) = 19 m. Under 19 m the current rating is the limit; past it, the length is.
Pendant, table-lamp and tube-light leads. A 15–25 W LED fitting pulls well under an amp — the cord is picked for flexibility, not for current.
Ceiling and pedestal fans, chargers and double-insulated appliances — typically 60 W to 1 kW, which is under 5 A at 220 V.
Light-duty extension leads. Keep them short and uncoiled: a lead used still wound on its reel traps its own heat and the 19.5 A figure no longer applies.
Who buys this size: electricians rewiring light and fan points, repair shops re-terminating a burnt appliance lead, and homeowners making up an extension. It is a cord, not a wiring cable — 300/500 V insulation, class 5 stranding, no earth core in the sheath. If the appliance has a metal body you can touch — an iron, a heater, a room cooler — the earth has to travel with it, so take 1.5mm 3 core flexible cable instead. If the run is fixed inside conduit and will never move, 1.5mm single core solid wire is the cheaper and cleaner choice; a solid conductor breaks at the flex point if you use it on something that bends.
