The wire a house actually gets wired with. One 1.5 mm² solid copper conductor, PVC insulated to 450/750 V, pulled through conduit for light points, switch drops and small socket circuits — 19.5 A on method C, 12.1 Ω/km, 29 mV/A/m. Solid means one wire, not a bundle: it pushes through a conduit run without buckling and clamps hard in a terminal, and it is not meant to be flexed once it is in. The trade's 3/.029 is the stranded version of the same nominal size; this is the solid one. Drawn on the Pilone line in Lahore.

Worked example, using the 29 mV/A/m in the table. A lighting circuit carrying 6 A over a 30 m run loses 6 × 30 × 29 ÷ 1000 = 5.2 V. BS 7671 allows 3% on a lighting circuit, which is 6.6 V of a 220 V supply — so 30 m is close to the line, and 40 m is over it: 6 × 40 × 29 ÷ 1000 = 7.0 V. That is why a long veranda, boundary-wall or courtyard light run moves up to 2.5mm single core solid cable at 18 mV/A/m. The distance forces it, not the number of bulbs.

What is 1.5mm single core solid wire used for?

Is 1.5mm wire the same as 3/.029?
They are sold under the same name and they are not the same build. 3/.029 is three strands of 0.029 inch. Each strand is 0.029 × 25.4 = 0.737 mm across, so the three together compute to 1.28 mm² — sold as 1.5 mm². What is on this page is a single solid 1.5 mm² conductor, no stranding at all. Same nominal size, same circuits, different conductor.
How many lights can I run on 1.5mm wire?
The cable holds 19.5 A, about 4.3 kW at 220 V, but that is never the number that limits a lighting circuit. The breaker is: a 10 A MCB caps the circuit near 2.2 kW. Voltage drop bites earlier still — 6 A over 30 m already spends 5.2 V of the 6.6 V a lighting circuit is allowed. Count the wattage on the fittings and the length of the run, then let a licensed electrician set the breaker.
Should I use flexible wire instead of solid?
Solid conductor is the standard choice for fixed wiring in conduit — it doesn't move once installed. Use flexible cable where the cable itself needs to flex, such as appliance cords.
