Fire resistant cable in Pakistan: what the label has to prove

Fire resistant, flame retardant and low smoke are three separate claims, proved by three separate tests. Find out which one your specification means before anyone quotes you a price.

Pilone's line is PVC-insulated copper and aluminium power and lighting cable — 450/750 V fixed wiring, 300/500 V flexible cords, 70°C conductor rating, plus 90°C XLPE solar DC cable. Three different claims, three different tests

The three names get used as if they were one product, and they are not. A fire resistant cable is judged on whether its circuit still works while it burns. A flame retardant cable is judged on whether flame travels along the cable. A low smoke cable is judged on what comes off it. A cable can pass one test and fail the other two, and a quotation that says only "fire safe" tells you which of the three it met: none of them, until the report is on the table.

The three fire-performance claims and the test families their names refer to. Naming a test standard here says what a claim is measured by — it is not a statement that any particular cable, ours or anyone's, has passed it. Ask for the report and the issue date.

Read the table left to right and the spending decision falls out of it. Flame retardance is about the building not being helped to burn. Low smoke is about people getting out. Fire resistance is about a pump, a fan or a sounder still doing its job at minute ten. Only the third one is expensive, and only the third one is worth arguing about.

What Pilone Cables actually makes

Plainly, so nobody specifies the wrong thing off this page: we draw copper and aluminium power and lighting cable in Lahore, insulated and sheathed in PVC, and XLPE-insulated DC cable for solar. That is a general-purpose range. It has no fire-performance claim attached to it, because we do not hold the test reports that would justify one.

The Pilone range as it is actually built. Voltage designations and conductor temperature ratings are the product's own specification; conductor sizes and stranding per IEC 60228. No fire-performance category is claimed for any of it.

If a drawing, a tender or a building code names a fire-resistant, fire-survival or low-smoke cable, buy the cable it names and keep the test report on file. Ordinary PVC-insulated cable is not that product and must not be substituted for it, whatever the saving looks like on the bill of quantities.

Why the substitution is invisible until it is not

A fire survival cable is not a stronger version of an ordinary one. It is built so that when the polymer around the conductor is gone, something else — a mica-glass tape layer, a ceramifying compound — is still holding the conductors apart. That is the whole product. Ordinary PVC softens and the cores touch, and a short is the end of the circuit.

Which is why the substitution never shows up on handover. Both cables ring out the same on a continuity test, both look the same in the tray, both feed the sounder for years. The difference appears once, at the only moment the circuit existed for. That is also why the honest answer to "can you do it cheaper" on a life-safety circuit is no.

The fixings matter as much as the cable. A fire-rated circuit is usually required to be clipped with steel fixings, because plastic clips and ties let a hot cable drop out of the tray and pull its own terminations apart — a cable that survives the fire still fails if it is lying on the floor. Specify the support system with the cable, not after it.

Buying against a fire-safety clause

1. Name the claim

Go back to the clause and work out which of the three it means. Many Pakistani specifications say "fire resistant" where the intent is flame retardance in a riser, and the two prices are not close.

2. Ask for the report, not the brand

Test house, standard, category, sample construction, date. A supplier who names a certification body but cannot produce the document has told you nothing you can build on.

3. Specify the whole circuit

Cable, glands, clips, joints and the enclosure. The rating belongs to the installed circuit, not to the drum.

Does Pilone Cables make fire resistant cable?
No. Our line is PVC-insulated copper and aluminium power and lighting cable: 450/750 V fixed wiring, 300/500 V flexible cords, and 90°C XLPE solar DC cable. We hold no fire-performance test reports, so nothing we make should be specified as fire resistant, flame retardant or low smoke. Send us the clause and we will say so plainly rather than sell you the wrong cable.
What is the difference between fire resistant and flame retardant cable?
A fire resistant cable keeps its circuit working while it burns, which is why alarms, sprinkler pumps and emergency lighting are wired in it. A flame retardant cable makes no promise about the circuit at all. It only resists carrying flame along its own length, so a fire does not climb a riser on the cable itself. Different tests, different products, different prices.
Is low smoke cable the same as fire survival cable?
No. Low smoke and halogen free describes what the cable gives off — smoke density and acid gas in an escape route — not whether the circuit survives. A cable can be low smoke and still fail in the first minutes of a fire. Enclosed public buildings often specify both, and that means two separate test reports, not one.
What should I ask a fire resistant cable supplier for?
The test report, the category and the date, in writing. Circuit integrity is proved by the IEC 60331 family of tests and graded by categories such as those in BS 6387. Flame spread is proved on a bunched sample under IEC 60332-3. Smoke and acid gas are proved under IEC 61034 and IEC 60754. A supplier who answers with a brand name instead of a report has not answered.
Can I use ordinary PVC cable where the drawing says FR?
No, and the substitution is usually invisible until it matters. Ordinary PVC insulation softens and the conductors touch, so the circuit fails early in a fire — which is exactly the moment an alarm sounder or a smoke-extract fan has to keep running. If a life-safety circuit is on the drawing, buy the cable the drawing names and keep the report on file.
