Pilone vs Service Cables: weigh the coil before you pay for it

We will not rate another maker's cable. We have not tested Service Cables, we hold no test reports, and we have found none published for either company.

What we can give you is the check that works at a shop counter with nothing but a scale: copper has a fixed mass per metre for a given size, so a coil cannot weigh less than the copper it is sold as. A 90 m coil of single-core 4 mm² carries 3.20 kg of conductor before any insulation is counted. Weigh ours the same way.

Where the weight figure comes from

Copper's mass per unit length is fixed by its density and its cross-section, and nothing a factory does changes it. Run the division across the sizes and the same constant falls out every time: 22.2 kg/km ÷ 2.5 mm² = 8.88, 35.6 ÷ 4 = 8.90, 142.2 ÷ 16 = 8.89, 222.3 ÷ 25 = 8.89. So a copper conductor weighs about 8.89 kg per kilometre for every mm² of cross-section, and from that one number every row below is arithmetic.

This is the check that needs no instrument and no standard on your desk — a scale and the coil length. It will not tell you whether the insulation is right or whether the conductor was properly annealed. What it does tell you, in one weighing, is whether the cable in your hands contains the copper you are being charged for, which is the question most buyers are actually asking when they compare two brands on price.

Conductor mass only — insulation and sheath are extra, so treat every figure as a floor the coil must clear, never as the weight it should read on the scale. Coil column = kg/km × 0.090 km. How to run it at the counter

1. Fix the length first

Ask what a coil is, in metres, and get it said out loud before the scale comes out. Coil lengths differ between makers, and a short coil is the quietest way for a weight to come out low without anything being wrong with the copper.

2. Weigh the whole coil

Gross weight on the shop scale, then subtract the drum or the wrapper if there is one. Do the same on both brands you are comparing, at the same size and the same coil length — the comparison is what carries the information.

3. Compare against the floor

The coil must weigh more than its copper figure above, because insulation and sheath are on top. If a 90 m coil of single-core 4 mm² reads under 3.20 kg, the conductor is not 4 mm² of copper — ask what it is; for a sheathed multi-core coil, compare against the three-core column instead, which puts 100 m of 4 mm² three-core at 10.68 kg.

What weighing does not prove

It is a floor test, not a precision test. Insulation and sheath weight varies between makers, so a coil that clears the floor comfortably has told you only that the copper is roughly there — it has not told you that the conductor is exactly on size. For that, count the strands and measure one: the arithmetic is on the conductor measurement page. It also says nothing about insulation class or voltage rating. Fixed-wiring cable here is 450/750 V; light flexible cord is 300/500 V, and the two are not interchangeable however the coil weighs. Read the print on the sheath.

A coil that comes in under its copper floor holds less conductor than the size it is sold as, so every current figure the circuit was designed to is wrong for it. Send it back rather than pull it into a wall, and have a licensed electrician confirm the size the load needs — or work it out again in the cable size calculator.
