Best cable company in Pakistan: the seven checks that settle it

No public body ranks cable manufacturers in Pakistan, so "best" is not something you can look up. It is something you test, quote by quote.

Seven checks decide whether a cable supplier in Pakistan is worth buying from: who actually made the cable, the conductor class and its resistance in ohms per kilometre, the metres on the coil, the voltage rating printed on the sheath, whether the size is quoted in mm² or an imperial strand code, how the rate is formed, and the delivery window to your own city. Every one of the seven is answerable in writing before you pay. Check two is the one with a number behind it: IEC 60228 caps a 2.5 mm² class 2 conductor at 7.41 Ω/km and a 4 mm² at 4.61, and a conductor measuring above its limit is not the size on the label.

Why "best cable company in Pakistan" cannot be looked up

The ranked lists that fill these results are published by cable companies, and each one places itself first. The question a buyer can actually settle is narrower and far more useful: does this supplier state the conductor class and resistance for the size being quoted, the metres on the coil, and a delivery window to the buyer's own city, all in writing before payment? Those three answers are checkable, they are the same three for every supplier, and a supplier who gives them can be set beside any other.

The lists themselves are easy to read once you know the shape. Each entry carries a founding year, a row of certification names and two sentences of description, and the publisher sits at number one. None of them states a conductor resistance, a coil length or a measurement method — the three things that would let a reader check any of it. The same shape repeats a dozen times over, whichever brand you search.

"Best" also means different things to different buyers. A contractor pulling two thousand metres through conduit is buying consistency and honest coil lengths. A homeowner wiring one floor is buying the right size and a delivery date. A solar installer is buying insulation rated for a roof in June — 90°C XLPE or XLPO rather than 70°C PVC. The seven checks below are the same for all three. The weight each buyer puts on them is not.

The seven checks, in order

Ask them in this order. The first two decide whether the rest of the conversation is worth having.

1. Who made this cable?

Manufacturer or dealer. Both are legitimate, but the pricing logic differs: a dealer buys at one day's copper rate, holds the stock, and sells later at its own margin, while a maker quotes off the line. Ask which one you are talking to, and where the line is.

2. What is the conductor class, and its resistance in ohms per kilometre?

Copper or aluminium; class 2 (stranded, for fixed wiring) or class 5 (flexible); and the resistance figure for that size. This is the one number a standard defines and a meter can check. The limits are in the table below.

3. How many metres are on the coil?

Cable is sold by the coil here, and coil length is not the same everywhere. Two quotes are not comparable until both are converted to a price per metre. Get the figure with the rate, not after the coil arrives.

4. What is printed on the sheath?

Size, core count, voltage rating and the standard. Fixed wiring cable in PVC is a 450/750 V cable to IEC 60227; light flexible cords are 300/500 V. Print that does not match the quote ends the conversation.

5. Is this quoted in mm² or a strand code?

The trade sells in imperial strand codes and the standards work in mm², and they do not line up. 7/.029 computes to about 3.0 mm² and is sold as 2.5. Ask for both numbers, so you know what you are holding against what.

6. How is the rate formed, and what moves it?

Copper is most of what a cable costs and its price moves daily with the metal market. A supplier who cannot say what today's rate is built from cannot explain tomorrow's either.

7. What is the delivery window to my city, in writing?

Before payment, and to your city rather than the seller's. Ask who carries it as well: single coils normally go by courier, bulk goes by transport, and the two do not take the same time.

Check 2 in numbers: what a copper conductor has to measure

This is the check that separates a spec from a slogan. IEC 60228 sets a maximum conductor resistance for every size and class. A conductor that measures above the limit is either smaller than the label says or not the metal the label says — there is no third explanation. Ask the supplier for the figure for your size, then read it against the row below.

Resistance is measurable and a purity percentage is not. No meter at a shop counter reads purity, and no invoice proves it, which is why a supplier who answers this question with a percentage has not answered it. The mass column is the second reading on the same coil, and it comes straight out of the same table: 35.6 ÷ 4 = 8.9, so copper runs about 8.89 kg per kilometre per mm² of conductor at every size in the list. That means 100 m of 4 mm² single core holds 35.6 × 0.1 = 3.56 kg of copper, and nothing a seller says changes that figure. Every size in that table is a cable we draw. The 4 mm² ships as 4mm 2 core standard cable, the 16 mm² as 16mm 2 core cable for meter tails and submains, the 25 mm² as 25mm 4 core cable.

What a certificate tells you, and what it does not

A certification mark records that a product met a named standard, for a named scope, at the time it was assessed. It does not travel with the coil. It does not tell you the metres wound on that coil, which line drew it, or what the conductor measures today. Treat a mark as one input among seven, never as the answer.

Where a supplier names a mark — ISO, PSQCA and PEC all come up in this trade — ask three things: which standard, by number; which products and size range the certificate covers; and its date. A mark quoted without those three is a logo, not a check. Then ask for the spec sheet for the size you are actually buying, because the spec sheet is the document you can hold a supplier to on the day the coil arrives.

Our own position, stated plainly rather than dressed up: Pilone Cables holds no third-party test report and publishes none. What we publish is the conductor spec for every size we draw, and we will measure conductor size and resistance on a coil at the factory when a customer asks. For a formal compliance report you need an accredited testing laboratory, which is a different service from anything a manufacturer can honestly do for its own cable.

The named manufacturers, and what is checkable about them

The same names come up in every list, so here they are. We publish three kinds of fact about another company and nothing else: the year it says it started, whether its accounts are public, and the marks it names in its own material. No ratings, no purity percentages, no coil-length figures — we have measured nobody else's cable.

A listed company files audited accounts you can read; an unlisted one does not, which is normal in this trade and not a fault. A named mark is worth its certificate number, its scope and its date, and nothing without them. None of it says what the coil in front of you measures, which is why the seven checks are run on the quote and not on the company.

Two quotes, side by side

Two quotes arrive for what both sellers call the same wire, and neither is written in the same units as the other.

The working. 7/.029 is seven strands of 0.029 inch and computes to about 3.0 mm², not 2.5. At 8.89 kg/km per mm² that conductor weighs 3.0 × 8.89 = 26.7 kg/km, so a 90 m coil holds 26.7 × 0.09 = 2.40 kg of copper. Quote B is a true 2.5 mm² at 22.2 kg/km, so its 100 m coil holds 2.22 kg. The shorter coil carries about 8% more copper than the longer one. Priced per coil, A looks dearer; priced per kilogram of copper it may be the cheaper of the two, and neither can be judged until both are converted.

What buyers rate us on

Where we are the wrong supplier, we will say so. Aluminium beats copper on long service drops and heavy feeders on cost per amp, and we sell aluminium cable for exactly that; inside the house at small sizes it is the wrong metal, and the reasoning is in copper vs aluminium cable. Current capacity and voltage-drop figures quoted anywhere on this site assume BS 7671 reference method C (clipped direct), 30°C ambient, PVC insulation. Derate for conduit, grouping and higher ambient temperature. Judge a supplier on seven checkable things instead: who made the cable, conductor class and resistance, coil metres, sheath print, quoting units, how the rate is formed, and delivery in writing. The same seven questions work for a wire company or a cable company; the name on the label does not change them.
Which is the best electric cable brand in Pakistan?
A brand name is a proxy for the things that actually matter, and the proxy fails the moment a coil is repacked or relabelled. Is factory-direct actually cheaper than a dealer?
It removes one margin layer. A dealer buys from a manufacturer or distributor, holds the stock, and adds its own markup before selling to you; buying from the line that drew the cable removes that layer. The metal is still priced at the day's copper rate, so the base cost moves either way. The difference is what sits on top of it.
How many metres are on a cable coil in Pakistan?
Single-core building wire is commonly sold in 90 m coils, but coil length is not standardised across makers and it is the figure most often left out of a quote. Ask for the metres with the rate, in writing. Until you have it, two per-coil prices cannot be compared — convert both to a price per metre first.
Why is one quote so much cheaper for the same size?
Usually one of three reasons, and all three are checkable. The coil is shorter. The conductor's true area is smaller than the label implies — 7/.029 is about 3.0 mm², 3/.029 about 1.29 mm². Or the conductor is not solid copper. Ask for coil metres, the strand code and the resistance figure, and the gap normally explains itself.
