Three 16 mm² class 5 conductors, 126 strands of 0.40 mm each, PVC insulated and sheathed to 450/750 V. Tabulated at 76 A with three loaded conductors on method C at 30°C, and 85 A when only two are loaded — the single-phase case, line and neutral working with the third core as earth, which is about 18.7 kW at 220 V. Check the run length against the load before you buy the coil. A site distribution board pulling 60 A over a 30 m flexible feed drops 60 × 30 × 2.8 ÷ 1000 = 5.04 V — 2.3% of 220 V, inside the 5% BS 7671 allows on a power circuit, which is 11 V here. At the cable's full 76 A the same 11 V is reached at 11 000 ÷ (76 × 2.8) = 52 m. Beyond that the run length sets the size, not the load.

Who buys this size: site contractors, event and rental crews, and workshops running heavy single-phase equipment. The circuit is a 220 V feed with its own earth — in almost every job this cable goes into, the third core is the protective conductor and not a second phase. Where all three cores are loaded, as on three phases with no neutral, the rating drops from 85 A to 76 A, which is why both figures are printed above. For a run that will never move, 16mm 3 core standard cable is the same copper in the cheaper class 2 build. For three phases plus a neutral, take 16mm 4 core flexible cable.

Class 2 standard uses seven thick strands, costs less for the same size, and is meant to be clipped or drawn in once and left. If the cable moves after installation, buy flexible.
Should I use flexible or solid cable here?
Flexible class 5 cable is for connections that move or need repeated bending — portable boards, generator leads, workshop feeds. Fixed, permanent circuits are usually wired with solid or class 2 stranded cable instead.
