Three 10mm² class 5 cores in one sheath — three phases to a machine that gets moved, or live, neutral and earth to heavy single-phase gear dropped down a borewell and dragged across a yard. 80 strands of 0.40 mm per core is what lets it bend all day without work-hardening. 57 A on method C with all three cores loaded as phases; give the third core to earth and only two are loaded, so the same cable is good for 63 A. 1.91 Ω/km, 4.4 mV/A/m, 300/500 V. Worked example, using the 4.4 mV/A/m in the table. A pump lead carrying 25 A down a 60 m drop loses 25 × 60 × 4.4 ÷ 1000 = 6.6 V, which is 3% of a 220 V supply and inside the 5% BS 7671 allows on a power circuit. Take the same 25 A to 100 m and the drop is 11 V — exactly that 5%. Below that depth the metres have chosen the size for you, and the next step is 16mm 3 core flexible cable at 2.8 mV/A/m. On a borewell it is nearly always the depth, not the motor, that sets the cable.

Can I use 10mm 3 core flexible cable for a submersible pump?
For the run from the starter down to the well head, yes — that is what the class 5 conductor and the earth core are for. The length that hangs permanently in water is a different job: it needs a cable rated for continuous submersion, usually the flat type the pump maker specifies. Confirm the submerged section with your pump installer before you order the whole drop.
Should I use standard cable instead of flexible?
Use flexible cable where the cable needs to move, coil, or trail — pumps, generators, portable tools. For a fixed run in conduit or clipped to a wall, standard cable is the normal choice.
