Every coil leaves our factory with a QR code printed on the packaging. Scan it and the factory record for that batch opens: brand, cable size, batch number, year of manufacture and conductor. Compare the batch number on screen with the one printed on your coil — if the two do not match, it did not come from us.

Two conditions have to be true together before this is the right cable to buy: the load is heavy for a cord — 30 to 46 A on a 220 V single-phase supply — and the cable itself has to move, coil or sit on something that vibrates. That is why the buyers are pump fitters, workshop electricians and appliance installers rather than house wiremen. If the run is going to be clipped to a wall and left there for twenty years, the class 2 build in 6mm 3 core standard cable does the same job for less copper money.

Machine cords and welding-set leads that are dragged out, coiled and re-coiled daily. Class 5 stranding is built for that cycle.
Length still has to be checked. Voltage drop is current × length × 7.3 mV/A/m, divided by 1000. A 40 A single-phase machine on a 15 m tail drops 40 × 15 × 7.3 ÷ 1000 = 4.4 V, which is 2.0% of 220 V — well inside the 5% BS 7671 allows on a power circuit, 11 V here. Two of the three cores are loaded on a single-phase circuit, which is why the tabulated figure is 46 A; wire all three as phases on a 400 V machine with no neutral and three conductors are loaded, so the same cable is tabulated at 41 A. Either way, a lead left coiled on its drum under load carries less than the table says, because the heat cannot leave the middle of the coil. Pay it out before you load it.
