What size wire for a washing machine point — and does it need an RCD?

A washing machine draws 500–2,000 W depending on whether it heats its own water — 2.3 to 9.1 A at 220 V — against a cable rated 27 A. Capacity is never what runs out here. The earth and the RCD are what a wet floor makes non-negotiable, and the one thing that does go wrong is two heating appliances sharing one 16 A way.
Washing machine wire size, by machine
A washing machine point in Pakistan takes 2.5 mm² copper on a 16 A MCB, wired as three cores so live, neutral and earth are all 2.5 mm², with a 30 mA RCD ahead of it. The machine draws 500–2,000 W, which is 2.3–9.1 A at 220 V, and 2.5 mm² is rated 27 A clipped direct at 30°C, so the margin survives derating for conduit and summer heat. The size does not change with the model; what changes is whether that 16 A way also feeds a second heating appliance, and the answer to that is another way, not thicker copper.
Typical domestic machines on a 220 V single-phase supply — read your own rating plate. Current = watts ÷ 220. Cable capacity is for two loaded conductors, copper, PVC, BS 7671 reference method C (clipped direct), 30°C ambient; conductor data per IEC 60228. 7/.029 is the trade code this size is sold by; it computes to about 3 mm², so the two names do not coincide exactly. The earth and the RCD, not the copper
This point stands on a floor that gets wet, and the person loading it is often barefoot. Three rules follow, and none is about cable size.
Three cores, not two. The earth runs the full 2.5 mm² back to the board and onto the socket's earth pin.
A 30 mA RCD ahead of the way. The MCB protects the cable; the RCD protects the person. A 16 A MCB will not notice tens of milliamps leaking to earth through someone standing on a wet floor.
Socket above the splash line, off to one side — not behind the machine where the inlet hose and drain sit, and not at floor level.
Current capacity depends on how the cable is installed. Derate for conduit, grouping and ambient above 30°C, taking the correction factors from BS 7671. Have a licensed electrician confirm the size, the earth and the RCD for your installation — or start with the cable size calculator.
Washing machine aur dishwasher ek hi point par?
Hisaab yeh hai. Machine heater ke saath 2,000 ÷ 220 = 9.1 amp, aur dishwasher bhi 2,000 ÷ 220 = 9.1 amp. Dono ek saath 18.2 amp, aur MCB 16 A ka hai — woh trip karega, aur theek karega. Cable ka is mein koi qusoor nahi: 2.5 mm² 27 amp tak le jata hai.
The cable is not the limit; the way is. Give each appliance its own 16 A way. Going up to 4 mm² fixes nothing, because the breaker rating decides this and not the copper. Length is not the issue either: 12 m at 9.1 A costs 18 × 9.1 × 12 ÷ 1000 = 1.97 V, inside a 3% budget of 6.6 V. Check yours in the voltage drop calculator.

Is 1.5mm wire enough for a washing machine?
On capacity alone yes: 1.5 mm² is rated 19.5 A clipped direct at 30°C, above the 9.1 A a heating machine draws. In practice take 2.5 mm². The point is a socket outlet that gets shared, the run is usually in conduit alongside other circuits, and 2.5 mm² still holds a margin over a 16 A MCB after derating. 1.5 mm² does not.
What size cable for a dishwasher?
The same 2.5 mm² on a 16 A MCB with a 30 mA RCD. A dishwasher draws typically 1,200–2,000 W, which is 5.5–9.1 A at 220 V — the same band as a washing machine, and for the same reason: nearly all of it is the water heater. Give it its own way rather than sharing one with the washing machine.
Front loader or top loader — does the cable change?
No. Both take 2.5 mm² on a 16 A MCB. What changes is the load. A top loader without a heater draws typically 350–500 W, about 1.6–2.3 A, while a front loader heating its own water reaches 2,000 W and 9.1 A. Both sit well under the 27 A the cable carries, so the cable and the breaker stay the same.
