What size cable for a commercial freezer — single phase or three phase?

PILONE CABLES TECHNICAL TEAM

4 mm² copper on a heavier single-phase cabinet at 220 V. On a 400 V three-phase unit, 4 mm² four-core.

This is the one appliance here where a chart cannot hand you the number. Display chillers, glass-door cabinets, walk-ins and condensing units run anything from a domestic-sized compressor to a three-phase machine, and the figure that sizes the cable is the full-load current on the plate. Find that first. 4 mm² is where most single cabinets land: 36 A on two loaded conductors, 32 A on three, clipped direct at 30 °C.

Read the plate, then read the row

For a commercial freezer the cable is sized from the full-load current on the unit's rating plate, not from a wattage band, because the same words cover machines an order of magnitude apart: a 220 V single-phase glass-door cabinet and a 400 V three-phase condensing unit are both called a commercial freezer. Two things on the plate settle everything else — the supply voltage and phase count, which fix the core count, and the FLA, which fixes the size.

Cable per what the rating plate states. Single-phase rows read the two-loaded-conductor column; three-phase rows read the three-loaded-conductor column. Copper, PVC. Capacity per BS 7671 reference method C (clipped direct), 30 °C ambient; conductor data per IEC 60228. Derate for conduit, grouping and higher ambient. Verify sizing with a licensed electrician.

The sum a shop fit-out usually skips

Take a glass-door display freezer with 1200 W on the plate, 220 V single phase: 1200 ÷ 220 = 5.5 A running, and the plate's FLA will read higher, because the compressor's locked-rotor current is what the protection has to ride out. On its own 16 A way in 2.5 mm² that cabinet is inside every number. Now put three of them along one wall on one 16 A way, which is what happens when a shop grows a cabinet at a time: 3 × 5.5 = 16.5 A, over the breaker before a door has been opened.

Each cabinet is small; the row of them is not. What gives out is the shop's submain, not the freezer's tail, and the fix is a way each at the board and a submain sized for the total — the arithmetic in the commercial load calculation guide. Run 4 mm² where the cabinet is heavier than a domestic unit, where the board sits at the front of the shop and the freezer at the back, or where a bigger machine may replace it later. Where the plate says three phase, the run becomes four-core and the three-phase cable size rules take over.

A three-phase unit must be connected in the correct phase rotation and isolated at the machine; a scroll compressor run backwards is damaged quickly. Every commercial cabinet needs a working earth and a local isolator a technician can reach without walking to the board. Derate for conduit, grouping and ambient above 30 °C using the correction factors in BS 7671, and have a licensed electrician confirm the size, the protection and the isolation for your installation.

The cable for this job

Single-phase cabinet, three core so the earth matches: 4mm 3 core flexible cable for a tail behind the machine, or 4mm 3 core standard cable for a fixed run in conduit. Three-phase unit, four core: 4mm 4 core cable price, stepping up to 6mm 4 core cable where the plate's FLA passes 25 A.

Frequently asked

How do I know whether my commercial freezer is single phase or three phase?
The rating plate says so. A single-phase machine reads 220–240 V, 1 phase or 1 Ph, and needs three cores — live, neutral, earth. A three-phase machine reads 380–415 V, 3 phase or 3 Ph, and needs four: three lives and an earth, with a neutral where the controls use one. The terminal box tells the same story.
Do I need 4mm cable, or is 2.5mm enough for a commercial freezer?
Compare the plate's full-load current with the breaker, not with the cabinet's wattage. Up to about 16 A FLA on a 220 V single-phase unit, 2.5 mm² at 27 A holds with margin. Between 16 and 25 A, take 4 mm² at 36 A. Long runs to the back of a shop and hot plant rooms both push the choice up a size.
Can I put two display freezers on one MCB?
Add their full-load currents first. Two 1200 W cabinets are about 5.5 A each, so 11 A — that fits a 16 A way, though both compressors starting together will test it. A third takes the total to 16.5 A and the way is over its rating before a door has been opened. Give each cabinet its own way and size the submain for the row.
Commercial freezer ke liye alag circuit zaroori hai?
Haan. Har cabinet ko board par apna way milna chahiye, taake ek machine ki kharabi baqi sab ko band na kare aur stock mehfooz rahe. Machine ke paas ek isolator bhi lagayein, taake technician ko board tak jana na pare. Cable ka size hamesha plate par likhe FLA se liya jaye.
