4mm 4 Core Standard Cable

4.8/5 · 127 buyer ratings

PILONE CABLES TECHNICAL TEAM

Four 4 mm² class 2 conductors under one PVC sheath — three phases and a neutral — 7 strands of 0.85 mm per core, the size the counter still orders as 7/.036. 32 A with three loaded conductors, 4.61 Ω/km, 450/750 V. This is the smallest four core we build in the standard class 2 range: one cable and one gland to feed a workshop board or a small three-phase motor, about 22 kVA at 400 V. Made on the Pilone line in Lahore.

Check the coil before you pay for it

Every coil leaves our factory with a QR code printed on the packaging. Scan it and the factory record for that batch opens: brand, cable size, batch number, year of manufacture and conductor. Compare the batch number on screen with the one printed on your coil — if the two do not match, it did not come from us.

Where this cable belongs

The buyer for this one almost always has a three-phase connection on a small premises: a workshop with a lathe and a compressor, a shop taking its own sub-board off the main panel, a tubewell starter a short walk from the meter. Four cores means three phases plus the neutral in one sheath, so a 400 V board is fed with one cable and one gland instead of four singles in conduit. 32 A with three loaded conductors, clipped direct at 30°C — about 22 kVA on a 400 V supply (1.732 × 400 × 32 ÷ 1000). Wire the same cable single-phase and only two conductors are loaded, which lifts it to 36 A. The imperial code for this size is 7/.036, computing to 4.6 mm² of copper; both numbers are worked out on the 7/.036 single core page.

Small three-phase submains

Main panel to a shop, annexe or workshop board where the diversified total stays under 32 A — roughly 22 kVA at 400 V.

Small motor feeders

Fixed runs to three-phase pumps and compressors. Size on the full-load amps printed on the motor plate, not on the horsepower on the box.

Machine drops in a shed

Clipped or in trunking to a fixed machine. If the tail has to move or coil, the class 5 build is the one to use, not this.

Worked example, from the table above. A 4 kW three-phase motor at 400 V and 0.85 power factor draws 4000 ÷ (1.732 × 400 × 0.85) = 6.8 A — read the plate on your own motor, because that figure is the one to size on. Over a 40 m run the drop is 6.8 × 40 × 11 ÷ 1000 = 3.0 V, against the 20 V that BS 7671's 5% allows on a 400 V power circuit. Push the same cable to its rated 32 A and that 20 V arrives at 20000 ÷ (32 × 11) = 57 m. Under that length the load picks the size; past it the run does, and the next step is 6mm 4 core cable at 41 A and 7.3 mV/A/m.

Current capacity depends on how the cable is installed. Derate for conduit, grouping, and high ambient temperature. Have a licensed electrician confirm the size for your load and run length — or start with the cable size calculator.

Frequently asked

What is the price of 4mm 4 core cable in Pakistan?
The price changes with the daily copper rate. Pilone Cables sells factory-direct from Lahore, below dealer rates. Message us on WhatsApp at +92 319 4262451 for today's price per meter.
What is 4mm 4 core cable used for?
It carries 3-phase power for smaller loads: submains from a main panel to a sub-distribution board, and feeders for small pumps or compressors. Rated around 32 A installed clipped direct.
Do I need flexible cable instead?
Use flexible cable only where the run bends or feeds equipment that moves. For a fixed submain, standard cable is the normal choice.
How many amps does 4mm 4 core cable carry?
32 A with three loaded conductors — three phases — clipped direct at 30°C on BS 7671 reference method C. That is about 22 kVA on a 400 V three-phase supply. Wire the same four cores as a single-phase circuit and only two are loaded, which lifts the figure to 36 A. In conduit, bunched with other circuits, or in summer heat, the correction factor comes off first.
Is 4mm 4 core cable enough for a three-phase submain?
For a small one, yes. 32 A across three phases is roughly 22 kVA at 400 V, which covers a workshop board with a few machines or a shop annexe. Add the connected loads, apply diversity, then compare the total against 32 A. Past about 57 m at full load, voltage drop rather than heat picks the size, and the step up is 6mm 4 core cable at 41 A.
