What size wire for a hair dryer? The socket circuit's, not its own

PILONE CABLES TECHNICAL TEAM

2.5 mm² copper — the wire shops sell as 7/.029 — on a 16 A MCB, which is the room's ordinary socket circuit. Nothing is wired specially for a dryer.

A hair dryer is typically 1000–2200 W, so 4.5–10 A at 220 V, drawn for five or ten minutes at a time. Against 2.5 mm² rated 27 A that is a light load, and the cable is never what gives way. The two things that do are the breaker, when a second heating appliance is on the same circuit, and the plug-and-socket contact behind it.

What a dryer adds to the bedroom circuit

A hair dryer point in Pakistan is a normal 3-pin earthed socket on a 2.5 mm² (7/.029) circuit protected by a 16 A MCB, and no separate cable or breaker is justified for it: 2200 ÷ 220 = 10 A against a conductor rated 27 A clipped direct at 30°C. The question worth asking is not what size the wire should be. It is what else is plugged into that same 16 A way.

Loads added one at a time on a single bedroom or dressing-point 16 A socket circuit at 220 V. Cable capacity per BS 7671, reference method C (clipped direct), 30°C ambient, two loaded conductors; conductor data per IEC 60228. Read your own appliances' rating plates. Verify sizing with a licensed electrician for your installation.

Read the last row carefully, because it is the whole point of this page. At 18.1 A the 2.5 mm² cable is still inside its rating and the 16 A breaker has already gone. That is the system behaving correctly: the breaker is there to trip before the cable is stressed. A tripping MCB in a bedroom in December is not a sign that the wire is too thin. It is a sign that two heating appliances are sharing one way.

The plug is the part that gets hot

Ten amps through a loose socket contact or a screw that has backed off in a plug top produces heat in a single square centimetre of brass. The breaker cannot see it — it is watching for tens of amps, and this is a few watts. A dryer finds those joints faster than most appliances because it is switched on and off several times a day, and each switch-on is a small mechanical and thermal shock at the contact.

Current capacity depends on how the cable is installed. Derate for conduit, grouping, and ambient temperature above 30°C, and take the correction factors for your own method from BS 7671. Have a licensed electrician confirm the size for your circuit and its total load — or start with the cable size calculator.

Cable tracks the daily copper rate, so we quote per metre and per coil on WhatsApp. Send the length and your city.

For the socket point chased into the wall — the 7/.029 on a 16 A MCB this page sizes — take the single-core 2.5mm 7/.029 copper cable, 450/750 V. Lighter appliance tails are made in 1.5mm 3 core flexible cable.

Frequently asked

Hair dryer ke liye kitne mm ka wire chahiye?
Alag wire ki zaroorat nahi. Kamre ka aam socket circuit — 2.5 mm² copper, dukaan par 7/.029, 16 A MCB par — kaafi hai. Dryer 2200 W par bhi sirf 10 amp leta hai, jabke 2.5 mm² ki rating 27 amp hai. Socket 3-pin earthed hona chahiye.
Can a dryer and a room heater run on the same socket circuit?
Not comfortably. A 2000 W dryer is 9.1 A and a 1000 W fan heater is 4.5 A, so together they are 13.6 A and leave 2.4 A under a 16 A MCB. Add an iron and the breaker trips. The cable is fine at that current; the way is not, so move the heater to its own way.
Why does the plug get hot when the wire stays cold?
Because the heat is in the contact, not the conductor. A loose socket contact or a backed-off terminal screw turns 10 A into a few watts of heat inside one square centimetre of brass, which is far too small a fault for an MCB to see. Replace the socket or the plug top and re-make the terminations.
Is an extension lead safe for a dryer?
Check the lead's own rating first. Most extension leads sold here are made up in 0.75 mm² flex, rated 6 A, which is 1320 W at 220 V — below a 2000 W dryer before anything else is plugged into the board. Use a wall socket on the fixed circuit instead.
