What size cable for a microwave oven — and what else is on that socket?

PILONE CABLES TECHNICAL TEAM

2.5 mm² copper on a 16 A MCB — the size the trade sells as 7/29.

A domestic microwave draws 1100–1500 W at the plug, which is 5.0–6.8 A on Pakistan's 220 V supply. 2.5 mm² is rated 27 A clipped direct at 30°C, so the cable is never the tight part of this job. What decides the kitchen counter circuit is the kettle, the toaster and the blender plugged in beside it — that arithmetic is below.

Read the plate, not the front panel

The number printed on the door of a microwave is its cooking output, not what it takes from the socket. An oven badged 800 W typically pulls 1100–1400 W at the plug, because the magnetron and the transformer are not free. Size the point on the input figure on the rating plate at the back, and treat the badge as marketing.

For a domestic microwave in Pakistan, run the counter point in 2.5 mm² copper on a 16 A MCB: the oven draws 1100–1500 W at the plug, which is 1100 ÷ 220 = 5.0 A to 1500 ÷ 220 = 6.8 A, and 2.5 mm² carries 27 A clipped direct at 30°C. The size is chosen for the whole counter circuit, not for the oven alone — 1.5 mm² would carry the microwave by itself, and runs out of room the moment a kettle joins it.

Circuit sheet for one microwave point on a 220 V single-phase supply. Copper, PVC. Current capacity and voltage drop per BS 7671, reference method C (clipped direct), 30°C ambient, two loaded conductors; conductor and stranding data per IEC 60228. Check the input rating on your own unit's plate first. Verify sizing with a licensed electrician for your installation.

The counter socket is the real circuit

Nobody wires a socket for a microwave. They wire a kitchen counter, and the microwave is one of five things that end up on it. These are the loads that share it.

Typical input wattages for counter and small household appliances in Pakistani homes, converted at 220 V (current = watts ÷ 220). Ranges are typical, not model figures — read the plate on your own appliance. Current capacity per BS 7671, reference method C, 30°C, copper, PVC.

Take a real breakfast: microwave at 1500 W, kettle at 1800 W, toaster at 800 W, all on at once. That is 4100 W, and 4100 ÷ 220 = 18.6 A on one 16 A MCB. The 2.5 mm² cable is fine — it carries 27 A, and even at a 0.75 correction for conduit and a hot kitchen it still holds 20.3 A. The breaker is what goes, and going up a cable size will not stop it. Two counter circuits, or one appliance at a time.

Microwave ke liye kitne mm ka wire chahiye?

3-core lein taake earth bhi 2.5 mm² ho, kyunke metal body wali cheez hai.

Current capacity depends on how the cable is installed. Derate for conduit, grouping, and ambient temperature above 30°C — a kitchen ceiling in June is not a 30°C room. Keep the socket reachable rather than trapped behind the oven, and have a licensed electrician confirm the size for your load and run length — or start with the cable size calculator.

Cable is priced off the day's copper rate, so we quote per metre and per coil on WhatsApp rather than publish a figure that goes stale. Send the metres and your city.

For a chased-in counter point, pull separate conductors of 7/.029 single core copper through the conduit, or take 2.5mm 2 core flexible cable where the earth runs separately.

Frequently asked

Microwave ke liye kitne mm ka wire chahiye?
2.5 mm² copper, trade code 7/.029, 16 A MCB par. Microwave plug se takreeban 1100–1500 W kheenchta hai, yani 220 volt par 5 se 6.8 amp. 2.5 mm² ki capacity 27 A hai, is liye wire kabhi tang nahi parti — masla us socket circuit ka hai jis par kettle aur toaster bhi lagay hotay hain. Apni unit ki plate par likha input wattage parh lein.
Is 1.5mm wire enough for a microwave?
For the oven on its own, yes on paper: 1.5 mm² carries 19.5 A and the microwave draws 5.0–6.8 A. In a Pakistani kitchen that socket is never the microwave on its own. Wire the counter in 2.5 mm² so the circuit still has margin when the kettle and the toaster go on with it. Keep 1.5 mm² for the fridge point and the lighting.
Can a microwave and an electric kettle run on the same socket circuit?
The cable can. The breaker often cannot. A 1500 W microwave and an 1800 W kettle together are 3300 W, which is 3300 ÷ 220 = 15 A — sitting right on a 16 A MCB before the toaster joins in. Split the counter across two circuits, or accept that two heating appliances at once will trip it.
Does a convection microwave or an OTG need a bigger cable?
The point stays 2.5 mm². Convection and OTG models add a heating element and can reach 2000 W, which is 9.1 A at 220 V — still well inside the 27 A the cable carries. What changes is the sharing: at 9.1 A one appliance has taken more than half a 16 A circuit, so give a large OTG its own way from the board.
