What size cable for a dishwasher point in Pakistan?

PILONE CABLES TECHNICAL TEAM

2.5 mm² copper — 7/.029 — three core with the earth, on its own 16 A MCB.

A dishwasher is not a motor appliance with a small heater. It is a water heater with a small motor. The element is typically 1800–2200 W, which is 8.2–10 A at 220 V, and it is on for much of a wash cycle rather than in bursts. That is more current, held for longer, than anything else on a Pakistani kitchen worktop.

The circuit sheet for a dishwasher point

For a dishwasher in Pakistan the point is 2.5 mm² copper, three core so the earth matches the live and neutral, on a dedicated 16 A MCB: the heating element draws 8.2–10 A at 220 V against the 27 A it carries clipped direct at 30 °C, leaving 11 A of margin over the breaker before derating. Read the rated current off the data plate inside the door before you buy cable, because the element is where machines differ most.

Circuit sheet for one domestic dishwasher, 220 V single phase. Element wattage is a typical band — read the data plate on your own machine, usually inside the door frame. Margin is the cable's capacity less the 16 A MCB rating, before derating. Capacity and voltage drop per BS 7671 reference method C (clipped direct), 30 °C ambient; conductor data per IEC 60228. Verify sizing with a licensed electrician.

What happens when it shares the kitchen circuit

Do the sum for a normal evening with the dishwasher on the shared worktop circuit: element 2200 W = 10 A, kettle 1500 W = 6.8 A, microwave 1200 W = 5.5 A. That is 22.3 A on a 16 A MCB. The breaker goes — and it goes in the middle of a wash, which is the failure people blame on the machine. On a dedicated way, the dishwasher takes 10 A of 27 A of cable and 10 A of the breaker, and nothing plugged in elsewhere can move those numbers.

Length is not the constraint. At 10 A over a 12 m run it drops 18 × 10 × 12 ÷ 1000 = 2.16 V, inside the 5.5 V a final power circuit gets when the installation is held to 5% of 220 V — 11 V — and the submain has spent the other half. The same run in 4 mm² drops 1.32 V, which buys less than a volt — go up a size only when the run to the kitchen is long, or the same way also feeds a second heating appliance. Check your own run in the voltage drop calculator.

A dishwasher is metal, earthed and full of hot water, standing on a kitchen floor. Run the earth as the third core at full size, terminate it properly at the machine, and put the point on an RCD — the wet-area rules are set out in full on the washing machine cable guide, and they apply here in the same way. Derate for conduit, grouping and ambient above 30 °C using the correction factors in BS 7671, and have a licensed electrician confirm the cable, the breaker and the earthing for your installation.

The cable for this job

Take the three-core version so the earth is 2.5 mm² as well: 2.5mm 3 core flexible cable for the run behind the units, or 2.5mm single core copper (7/.029) where singles are pulled through conduit.

Frequently asked

Dishwasher ke liye kitne mm ka wire chahiye?
2.5 mm² copper — trade code 7/.029 — 3 core, apne alag 16 A MCB par. Dishwasher ka heating element 1800–2200 W ka hota hai, yani 220 volt par 8.2–10 A, aur woh poore cycle mein kaafi der chalta hai. Isi liye ise kitchen ke aam socket circuit se alag rakhna behtar hai.
Does a dishwasher need its own circuit, or can it share the kitchen sockets?
Give it its own way. At 8.2–10 A it is the heaviest thing on the worktop, and it holds that current for most of a cycle. Sharing with a kettle and a microwave puts about 22 A on a 16 A breaker and it trips mid-wash. On a dedicated way in 2.5 mm² nothing else can reach it.
Does a dishwasher point need an earth and an RCD?
Yes to both. Run three cores so the earth is the same 2.5 mm² as the live and neutral, terminate it at the machine's earth stud, and protect the point with an RCD because it is a wet location with an earthed metal appliance. The full wet-area treatment is on the washing machine cable guide.
Can I just plug a dishwasher into a normal socket?
Electrically a 13 A socket carries 10 A, so it will run. Two practical problems remain: the socket must be reachable without dragging the machine out, and it must not be the same shared circuit as the kettle. A switched fused spur beside the unit, on its own way, solves both.

Wiring a new kitchen point?

We draw the copper in Lahore and sell it at the day's rate — no dealer margin. Send the run length and your city: Punjab in 1–2 days, rest of Pakistan in 2–4.
