A plant is not one cable job. The fixed feeder, the tail onto a machine that moves, the run across the yard and the long incoming line are four different products, and the shed they all sit in is hotter than the chart that rated them.
Pick the family first, size it second, then take the shed's temperature off the rating.
Fixed feeders from the main panel to sub-boards and machines are class 2 stranded copper, PVC insulated, 450/750 V, four core. Tails onto a machine that moves or vibrates are class 5 flexible. A yard crossing or a buried run goes armoured. On the long incoming line the metal itself changes, because aluminium costs less per metre for the same job. Then every capacity comes down: a 22 kW compressor draws 22,000 ÷ 611 = 36 A at 415 V, and on a tray in a shed well past 30 °C the 41 A that 6 mm² carries on the chart is not enough — 10 mm² is.
What separates a factory from a building of the same floor area: the loads run for shifts rather than minutes, and half the cable is moving or exposed. Read the third column — the family is chosen by what the cable has to survive, not by the current.

Rows one and two are the ordinary sizing job — the kW-to-mm² ladder is on 3-phase cable size, and a single motor with its starting current on industrial cable sizing. Row four decides on the route rather than the amps: cable for an underground run. Row six is derived from the phase conductor, on earth cable.
The compressor sits 45 m from its sub-board, the feeder runs on a tray with other loaded circuits, and the shed roof holds the floor around 45 °C through the summer. This is the arithmetic, written so it can be audited.
So the feeder is 10mm 4 core cable — one size above what the 30 °C chart alone would have sold you, and the whole difference is the factor. Write it as base × factor = result every time. Check your own run in the voltage drop calculator, or start from the load in the cable size calculator.

Lighter and cheaper per metre where the metre count, not the machine, decides the order.
Inside the plant the answer is copper: machine terminals are made for it, and the runs are too short for the metal price to be the argument. The argument starts on the incoming line, where the metre count decides the order. The lighter metal carries less current for the same mm², so the conductor steps up and the terminations have to be made for it — per-size figures on aluminium cable, and the trade-off in full on copper vs aluminium cable.
