Pilone vs Golden Cables: weigh the copper, not the coil

Strip one metre of conductor and weigh it. 2.5 mm² should read 22.2 g, 4 mm² should read 35.6 g.

Copper weighs about 8.89 kg per km for every mm² of cross-section, and that number does not care whose name is on the drum. So the one claim a buyer can settle without a laboratory is the one that matters most: whether the coil holds the cross-section it is sold as. We publish our own figures below so the same scale can be turned on us. What we will not do is publish measurements of Golden Cables' product, because we have not measured it.

What a metre of copper should weigh

The arithmetic behind the table is one line. A 10 mm² conductor masses 88.9 kg per km, so 88.9 ÷ 10 = 8.89 kg per km for every mm². Multiply that by the nominal size and you have the mass of any copper conductor, per kilometre or, dividing by a thousand, per metre in grams.

Doing the test on a real coil

Take a 100 m coil of 2.5 mm² two-core. The copper in it is 2 × 2.22 = 4.44 kg. The coil on the scale will read more than that, because PVC insulation, the outer sheath and the drum all have mass, and insulation thickness is not identical between makers. So a whole-coil weight only compares two coils of the same size, cores and construction — it is a screening test, not a verdict.

The decisive version takes five minutes. Cut exactly one metre, strip the insulation off a single conductor, and weigh the bare copper. 2.5 mm² reads 22.2 g, 4 mm² reads 35.6 g, 6 mm² reads 53.3 g. Measure the metre against a steel tape, not by eye, because a 5% error in length is a 5% error in the answer. If the reading is well under the figure, the conductor is not the cross-section on the label — and that is a fact about the coil in your hand, which is the only thing either of us can honestly argue about.

Two limits, stated plainly. The test checks cross-section, not what the metal is: a copper-clad aluminium conductor would come in far lighter, and how to tell the metals apart is on checking the conductor, not the label. Mass confirms the cross-section; it does not size a circuit. Current capacity depends on the installation method — every ampacity figure on this site is BS 7671 reference method C, clipped direct, 30°C ambient, PVC. Where the rate comes from

Once the copper in the coil is settled, the price follows it. Cable is priced off the day's copper rate, which is why we quote on WhatsApp instead of printing a figure that goes stale by the week. Pilone draws its own cable in Lahore and sells at the factory rate, with roots in the copper trade going back to 1992 and the cable line running since about 2020. How do I know a 2.5mm cable really has 2.5mm² of copper in it?
Weigh it. Copper works out at about 8.89 kg per km for every mm² of cross-section, so one metre of 2.5 mm² conductor is 22.2 g, one metre of 4 mm² is 35.6 g and one metre of 6 mm² is 53.3 g. Strip exactly one metre of a single conductor, put it on a kitchen scale, and compare. A conductor that reads well under the figure is not the cross-section on the label, whoever made it.
What should a 100 m coil of 2.5mm 2 core cable weigh?
The copper alone is 2 × 2.22 = 4.44 kg. The coil itself weighs more than that, because the PVC insulation, the outer sheath and the drum all add mass, and insulation thickness is not identical between makers. Use the coil weight only to compare two coils of the same size, cores and construction; for a decisive answer, strip a metre and weigh the bare conductor.
Does a heavier coil always mean better cable?
No. Extra PVC adds weight just as copper does, and a heavier drum adds weight that is not cable at all. The number that matters is the mass of the bare conductor per metre, because that is the cross-section the current capacity is read from. Weigh the copper, not the parcel.
