What size wire for a ceiling fan point — and how many fans on one circuit?

1 mm² copper carries a fan point on a 6 A MCB. In Pakistan the size actually sold for fan and light circuits is 3/.029 — 1.5 mm² — and that is what to buy.

A ceiling fan draws 60–80 W, which is 0.27–0.36 A at 220 V. Current never limits a fan circuit: 1 mm² is rated 10 A clipped direct at 30 °C, more than twenty fans' worth. Voltage drop down a long circuit is what limits it. On a 3.3 V budget it runs out at about six fans on a 30 m circuit, while 1.5 mm² holds ten.

What one fan point takes

A ceiling fan point in Pakistan is wired in 1.5 mm² copper — the wire the trade sells as 3/.029 — on a 6 A MCB shared with the room's lights. 1 mm² carries the load on paper: a fan is 60–80 W, so 60 ÷ 220 = 0.27 A and 80 ÷ 220 = 0.36 A, against 10 A clipped direct at 30 °C. The reason to take the heavier size instead is distance, not current — and the fact that a Pakistani shop stocks 3/.029 by the coil.

How many fans one circuit will actually hold

Charts that say "8 to 10 fans per circuit" rarely say what the limit is. Current is not it: a 6 A MCB divided by 0.36 A a fan is sixteen fans, and the cable clears the breaker either way. Voltage drop is what bites, because a fan and light circuit goes room to room and is the longest circuit in a house. Hold it to 3% of 220 V — 6.6 V — and give the final circuit half of that, 3.3 V, the submain having spent the rest.

Volts lost on a 30 m circuit at 0.36 A a fan, worst case with the whole load at the far end; points spread evenly come out near half these figures. Read down the columns against the 3.3 V budget: 1 mm² is spent between six and eight fans, 1.5 mm² between ten and twelve. Adding the room's lights barely moves it, because an LED point is 0.02–0.09 A. That is the honest basis for "eight to ten points on a fan circuit" — a voltage-drop rule wearing a rule-of-thumb coat, and on a short 15 m circuit you can carry more.

Fan points share a circuit with lights, so size that circuit for everything on it and derate for conduit, grouping and ambient above 30 °C using the correction factors in BS 7671. A fan hanging from a hook also needs a mechanically sound fixing and an earth at the point. Is 1mm wire enough for a ceiling fan?
For the load, easily. One fan is 0.27–0.36 A and 1 mm² is rated 10 A clipped direct at 30 °C. It stops being enough when the circuit gets long: on a 30 m run it spends the 3.3 V drop budget at six or seven fans. Take 1.5 mm² — 3/.029 — and the same circuit holds ten.
How many ceiling fans can I run on one circuit?
Eight to ten on 3/.029, and the limit is voltage drop, not the breaker. Ten fans is 3.6 A, well under a 6 A MCB, but at 30 m it drops 3.13 V against a 3.3 V budget. On a short 15 m circuit you can carry more; on a long run to an outbuilding, fewer. Measure the run, then count.

Does an exhaust fan or an LED light need a different size?
No. An exhaust fan is 30–60 W and an LED bulb or panel is 5–20 W, both lighter than a ceiling fan, so both sit on the same circuit. What changes with an exhaust fan is the location, not the cable: a bathroom or kitchen fan wants a proper earth and a sealed entry where the cable passes through the wall.
